Construction Noise Affects Newport Beach Appeal

Newport Beach may be the picture of coastal luxury and beachside living, but residents are starting to doubt this image as numerous construction projects create almost constant noise and pollution around the city.

The area’s key location has attracted several construction projects, both residential and commercial. Combined with the constant renovations for homes on the market, the resulting noise has attracted complaints from current homeowners.

In Harbor Island, an exclusive Newport community, three homes are currently under construction and two more are scheduled to be demolished. Resident Jean Watt believes that such disturbances are a consequence of the value of the land.

In the past four years, over a hundred homes have been demolished each year in Newport Beach. That amounts to more than two homes a week. In nearby San Clemente, a city with similar dimensions, only seven homes were torn down per year in the same period.

One of the reasons cited by experts is Newport’s transformation from a summer getaway into a residential city. As neighborhoods became more family-friendly, many owners set to transform their homes into more spacious living areas.

Another contributing factor is the number of custom homes built in Newport Beach. Unlike most construction projects, custom homes often take years to finish because of their size and the intricate details required by their owners.

Cities like Newport Beach do not usually limit the length of time spend on construction projects, although they try to ensure progress in each of the projects. Many cities also set specific working hours and make sure the machinery doesn’t block the streets.
