Renovated Senior Center Reopens in Corona del Mar

Newport Beach unveiled the Oasis Senior Center, a newly renovated retirement home in Corona del Mar, in a small ceremony last weekend. The project cost the city just over $15 million, less than the $20 million originally estimated.

The center now boasts a sleek contemporary façade combining lacquered wood, fossil stone, bright white sidings, and blue-tinted windows, which city officials say are a reflection of the surrounding coastal environment.

It was designed by Robert R. Coffee and Associates, an architecture firm based in Newport Beach. The design is also meant to relate to the residential neighborhood, with both traditional and contemporary elements taking center stage.

The facility offers upscale amenities such as a full-service gym, dance studio, classrooms, and a gift shop. It also includes a community garden, a terrace with a wide ocean view of Corona del Mar, and stainless steel barbecues.

The renovation took roughly 16 months as it involved a complete do-over. Among the most noticeable changes are the contemporary-style walkway and the refinished lobby, which now features sleek vaulted ceilings.

A major portion of the project’s budget came from private fundraising efforts, as well as park fees provided by the Irvine Company as a trade for development rights. A non-profit organization, Friends of Oasis, also offers financial and volunteer support.

A move had been previously made to rename the center after Evelyn Hart, former head of the City’s Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission, who was instrumental in raising funds for the project, although the center retains its original name for the time being.
